Town Pride Day

Town Pride Day was a success this year regardless of the graduation parties that were going on around town.  Everyone who attended had a good time.  Vitale’s had their Italian Ice/Ice Cream cart for all to enjoy and the Kiwanis brought their trailer and were turning out the best hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hotdogs and sausages you’ve ever had.  The French fries were pretty good, too.  DJ Sky Brady kept everyone moving, young and old.  Prizes of Vitale’s gift certificates were given out to the children and gift certificates donated by Witt’s Market were the adult prizes.

Mike Brown Scholarship

The 2010 recipient of the Mike Brown Scholarship is a young lady named Briana Day.  Briana has been playing softball for eight years and was on the starting team at Caesar Rodney High School this past season after moving here from Germany about a year ago.  Briana has been accepted at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont where she will be majoring in Physical Therapy through their Sports Medicine/Health Science Program.  The scholarship was awarded to Briana by Chief Chuck Manuszak at the Senior Awards Program at CRHS on June 3rd.  Until

this year the Mike Brown Scholarship has always been a $250.00 scholarship; however, at the June council meeting, it was decided to increase it to $500.00.  Briana will be the first to receive this amount.  The Town of Wyoming wishes Briana the very best.

Railroad Avenue Sidewalk Project

The original plans for the Railroad Avenue Sidewalk Project are drawing to a close.  The new sidewalks are looking great!  We have had a pleasant surprise; however, in that the project came in under budget.  Del DOT has decided to extend our original contract to extend new sidewalks farther  south almost to Southern Boulevard.  We apologize to residents at that end of Town for not giving you much notice on this as we did not know it was happening until the work had begun.  You may be assured that it will be worth the bother once the work is done.  The contractor has done a beautiful job and deserves credit for exceptional traffic control throughout the job.

Town Charter

After many, many months of hard work by the Charter/Ordinance Committee, Council and our attorney, Barrett Edwards, the New Charter passed the House on June 15th.  The rest should be smooth sailing.

Message from Chief Manuszak

I would like to take the time in this month's newsletter to highlight some of the serious crimes that the Wyoming police officers have been working on within this past year. As many of you are aware Wyoming is known for its strict traffic law enforcement. This enforcement is usually handled in one of two ways. The officers may give the offender a warning (verbal or written) or issue a traffic citation. The police officers are given the total discretion as to what type of enforcement is issued. There is a majority opinion that all the Wyoming cops do is run radar traps (speeding) for revenue for the town. I would like to educate the public we serve as to what we as police officers look for 'beyond the traffic citation'. In this past year your Wyoming police officers have taken guns, drugs, and wanted fugitives off of your streets in order to keep you protected. The officers have also recovered stolen property, for example items taken from a burglary and also one of the bigger crimes, recovering stolen motor vehicles. All these actions are due to the police officer's ability to look past just a traffic infraction. I hope you see that traffic enforcement is a very good tool in the fight against crime. One last item I would like to make you all aware of is the sex offender verification program we conduct once a month. This program has officers take the list of registered sex offenders whether they live in Wyoming or work here and confirm that they are still in compliance with state and federal sex offender laws. We are fortunate to have so few offenders compared to the communities around us. I am proud to say that we have arrested some of these sex offenders for failing to comply with registration laws. I believe this program keeps the sex offenders 'in check' while living or working in Wyoming. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time in any manner that is easiest for you.
