HALLOWEEN
The Town of Wyoming will be having its Annual Halloween Event at the train platform next to Town Hall on Saturday, October 31st, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Come one, come all to have some fun!
RED RIBBON WEEK
Red Ribbon Week is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the country. It generally takes place the last full week of October. This campaign commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.
YOUNG MARINES
The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school. It promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The Young Marines is the focal point for the U. S. Marine Corps’ Youth Drug Demand Reduction efforts.
The Town of Wyoming has chosen to proclaim October 23-31, 2009, as Red Ribbon Week in honor of the Lower Delaware Detachment of the Young Marines and encourages all citizens, businesses, public and private agencies, media, religious and educational institutions to wear and display red ribbons and participate in drug-free activities throughout that week, joining the rest of the state in promoting the Red Ribbon Celebration and a drug-free America.

What is Water Pollution?
When we think of water pollution, we mostly think of a pipe chugging out slimy sludge into a stream. Fortunately, the Clean Water Act took measures to regulate this type of pollution. Today, the water quality problems that we face are not so “cut and dry.” We live with another type of water pollution everyday in our community and we may not see it or know were it came from. This pollution is called “nonpoint source pollution.” Unlike those pipes that would drip pollution into the water, it is difficult to determine where the sources of nonpoint pollution originate. Examples of nonpoint source pollutants are fertilizers and pesticides, litter, pet waste, motor oil, and household cleaners. (An easy way to remember the difference between point and nonpoint source pollution: you can point to a pipe with sludge coming out of it. But with nonpoint source pollution there is no source that you can easily point to. For example, when you see a soda can floating down a drainage ditch, who or what put it there? Where did it come from? Did the wind blow it in? Did water carry it? As you can see, there is not one person or thing to point to for the source of these types of pollutants).
How do these pollutants get in the water in the first place? Nonpoint source pollutants can enter waterways by many means; however, the main way in which pollutants enter local streams and rivers is through storm water transportation. When it rains or when snow melts, storm water can flow over rooftops, paved areas, lawns and gardens and it can collect anything that is on those surfaces and transport it into our rivers and streams. So, all of us can be culprits of water pollution. But luckily, all of us can do our part in solving this problem. Here are some tips:
- Have your soil tested before placing fertilizers on your lawn and garden. Soil tests can be purchased at University of Delaware’s Cooperative Extension at (302) 730-4000
- Do not throw or drain anything down storm water drains, and don’t litter.
- Pick up after your pet.
- Use a broom instead of a hose to clean sidewalks.
- Take your car to a car wash or, if not, wash it on your grass.
- Be careful of watering your lawns in the summer months – Your grass needs only one inch of water every 5 to 7 days!
- Have routine maintenance of your car to prevent and identify potential leaks.
Funded by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Kate O’Brien is the Watershed Coordinator for the St. Jones Watershed. Water pollution affects everyone. Look for future items that will discuss local water issues and simple ways that you can make a difference in your community! 2ND Annual Rider Pride Day
The Caesar Rodney School District 2nd annual Rider Pride Day will be held on Homecoming Saturday, October 17, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Caesar Rodney High School. The public is invited to attend this family fun day/community celebration event that features school performances, cheerleaders, exhibition tables, door prizes, inflatable slide and moon bounce for children, face painting, a petting zoo, hayride, health screenings and information, law enforcement exhibits and vehicles, fire equipment and exhibits, plus much, much more. Those attending will receive a free hot dog, drink, cotton candy, and popcorn. Last year nearly 3,000 attended Rider Pride Day. This year will be even bigger and expanded. This is a great celebration of the partnership between the CR schools and the community.
Message from Chief Manuszak
I would like to inform everyone that the Wyoming Police Department started two new programs back in June, 2009. The first program is a Sex Offender Registration follow up duty. The Wyoming police officers go out to each location where a sex offender is registered as either residing or working in the town limits of Wyoming. This program allowspolice department to keep a watch on these offenders, to protect the citizens and visitors of Wyoming.date there are currently five sex offenders living or working in Wyoming. As of October 2009 all sex offenders have been accounted for as still active in Wyoming, although one offender quit his employment in Wyoming and never re-registered. The Wyoming Police Department has an active felony warrant for this subject. The second program is a fugitive search duty. The Wyoming police officers go out and attempt to locate fugitives wanted by not only the Wyoming Police Department, but agencies across the country from all levels of law enforcement. Please let us know if you have any problems. Enjoy your Halloween!
Mayor’s Notes
Hello Fellow Citizens,
It's that time of year again: football season, changing of the leaves, mums and pumpkins everywhere you look. It’s a great time of year to be outside. Please come out and support Caesar Rodney this weekend, October 16 for the annual Homecoming Parade and football game with Milford High School and October 17 for Rider Pride Day at the high school. This is a great time to socialize with neighbors, friends and your local government and school officials.
Have a great month,
Mike Marasco |
